    ADOPT A ROADWAY PROMO

ELKTON, MD. -- Though Mother Nature is being a bit stubborn this year, soon enough temperatures will warm up and spring will be here (hopefully, to stay). With that, comes a chance for Cecil County residents to get outside and enjoy the beautiful landscape around us, which also provides a perfect opportunity to sign up to be a participant in the County's Adopt-A-Roadway program.

Every year, tens of thousands of visitors travel our roads enjoying our scenery, our people and our places of interest. Unfortunately, visitors (and county residents) are often treated to the sight of trash and waste along the roadside. Uncaring and selfish individuals mar the beauty of our County with their careless actions. Many people never consider the costs of picking up their trash --  money that could have been better spent on roadway projects of a more lasting nature.

With 604 miles of roads in Cecil County, many of them are up for grabs and ready for some attention.

Participation in the Adopt-A-Roadway program is free of charge and simply requires a commitment to picking up litter along a designated three-mile stretch of county road (of your choice, based on availability) at a minimum of four times per year for a minimum of two years. Individuals or groups must sign an agreement with the Cecil County Roads Division to verify that all safety conditions are understood and followed. Groups with members under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult.

The Roads Division will provide a personalized road sign for both directions of the adopted roadway, a safety training class, safety vests and warning signs to display during clean up. For Adopt-A-Roadway guidelines, call 410-996-6270 or visit http://www.ccgov.org/government/public-works/public-works-divisions/roads-division.

    Speaking of cleaning up…

As a reminder, the Central Landfill will be holding Household Hazardous Waste Day on April 22nd from 7:30AM to 3PM where county residents can dispose of hazardous waste such as pool chemicals, paint, gasoline, pesticides and more. Regular waste will not be accepted during this event. For a complete list of hazardous materials that are accepted, visit http://www.ccgov.org/government/public-works/public-works-divisions/solid-waste-management-division.

Also on April 22nd, the first ever Cecil County Trash Bash will be held throughout the community. Residents are encouraged to rally their families, friends, neighbors, youth organizations, church groups and more to grab some trash bags and clean up the areas around us where we live, work and play. Many local high school sports teams, marinas, home owners associations have already committed to participating. County Council members and the County Executive will also be out and about gathering litter and working to beautify our area. Mark your calendars for Trash Bash and get involved! More information can be found online at http://www.ccgov.org/Home/Components/News/News/2448/18. Trash Bash participants are encouraged to send their clean up day photos to: webmaster@ccgov.org.

Cecil Transit will do their part to help clean up the air and reduce exhaust emissions on April 23rd by offering a Free Ride Day, which encourages folks to park their vehicles and give public transportation a try at no cost. Cecil Transit has numerous route options available throughout Cecil County and neighboring towns and, if you've never used public transit, they offer instructions on how it works. Learn more at www.ceciltransit.com or 410-996-5295, option #2.

Keeping Cecil County as clean and green as possible is a community effort and there are many ways for residents to be actively involved.
