September is Library Card Sign-Up Month: Be Empowered

(North East, MD) – September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Cecil County Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind teachers, parents, students, and caregivers that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

There is nothing more empowering than signing up for your own library card, whether it is a standard library card, an online card or the special 1,000 Book Before Kindergarten card. Through access to books, librarian expertise, technology, resources and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams and find success.

In addition, a partnership between the Cecil County Public Library and the Cecil County Public School system allows all CCPS students and educators to use their student ID as a library card at any location in Cecil County and throughout the website with no registration needed.

“Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children,” said Katelyn McLimans, Youth Services and Outreach Coordinator. “We have programs that serve students of all ages and backgrounds such as My Special Book, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, SPARK, and the Teens Give Back program.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries work together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
